Costa Rica is a popular tourist destination, welcoming millions of visitors each year. Renowned for its environmental conservation efforts, Costa Rica has mastered the concept of ecotourism and now tourists visit to see its untouched forests, remarkable beaches and abundance of biodiversity.
Eco-tourism is tourism in natural surroundings that has a reduced impact on the environment and supports conservation efforts. Spanning 10,500 hectares, a prime example of a smallscale eco-tourism destination is the Monteverde cloud forest. This is a mountain wildlife reserve in Costa Rica and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. It is rich in biodiversity, home to 3,000 Costa Rican plants, 400 species of birds, 100 species of mammals and thousands of insect species, thus making sustainable tourism a priority.
