On 4 May 1979 the Conservative Party won the general election. The party leader, Margaret Thatcher, became the first female prime minister in Britain. She soon embarked on a radical programme of measures that she believed was necessary to restore British economic effectiveness. This involved reducing trade union power, dismantling nationalised control of industry and ‘liberalising’ the economy. The Conservatives were to remain in power until 1997 and would transform the political and social landscape of Britain.
